Why Change Your IP Address?
Your IP address is your digital identity on the internet. Every device connected to the internet is assigned an IP address by the ISP, and through this address all your online activities can be tracked, your location determined, and in some cases your access restricted. There are many valid reasons to change your IP address: ensuring privacy and anonymity, bypassing geographical restrictions, recovering from IP bans, conducting security tests, or simulating access from different locations.
Especially in professional fields like web scraping, social media management, and SEO research, regularly changing IP addresses is an operational necessity. Sending continuous requests from the same IP can lead to blocking by target servers.
Types of IP Addresses: Static vs Dynamic
Dynamic IP addresses are automatically assigned by the ISP and can change at intervals. Static IP addresses remain fixed and are typically assigned to corporate users. There is also a distinction between public IP (visible from the internet) and private IP (internal to your local network like 192.168.1.x). Our main focus is changing the public IP address.
Method 1: Restarting the Router
- Unplug the router's power cable from the outlet.
- Wait at least 5-10 minutes. Brief restarts may result in the same IP due to cached DHCP leases.
- Turn the router back on and wait for the connection to establish.
- Check whether your IP changed using the ProxyTurk My IP Address tool.
Note: Some ISPs (especially fiber) use long DHCP lease times and may assign the same IP even after restart.
Method 2: Changing IP on Windows
CMD IP Renewal
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Release current IP:
ipconfig /release - Get new IP:
ipconfig /renew - Verify:
ipconfig /all
Manual Change via Network Settings
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet/Wi-Fi.
- Click Change adapter options.
- Right-click your connection > Properties > TCP/IPv4.
- Select Use the following IP address and enter new values.
Method 3: Changing IP on Mac
- Open Terminal:
sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP - Or go to System Settings > Network > Details > TCP/IP and set IPv4 to Manual.
Method 4: Changing IP on Phone
Android
- Settings > Wi-Fi > long press connected network > Modify Network.
- Advanced options > IP settings: Static.
- Enter new IP, gateway, and DNS. Save.
For mobile data, toggle airplane mode on/off to get a new IP.
iPhone
- Settings > Wi-Fi > tap (i) next to network.
- Configure IP > Manual. Enter new values.
Method 5: Using a Proxy (Most Effective)
All methods above share a limitation: you get a new address from the same ISP pool and your location does not change. For different countries, instant changes, or specific IP types, using a proxy is the most effective solution.
ProxyTurk offers Turkey's largest proxy infrastructure with over 131,072 ISP IP addresses. Supports HTTP and SOCKS5 protocols with 800-900 Mbps speeds using real ISP IPs.
Advantages of Proxy IP Changing
- Instant switching: No router restarts needed.
- Location change: Use IPs from different countries.
- Multiple IPs: Use many different IPs simultaneously.
- Auto rotation: Rotating proxy changes IP with each request.
- Undetectable: ISP IPs are indistinguishable from real user IPs.
By Proxy Type
Static ISP Proxy: Fixed IP from real ISPs. ProxyTurk ISP Proxy uses Turk Telekom, Superonline, Vodafone IPs.
Rotating Proxy: IP changes automatically — ideal for web scraping and SERP monitoring.
Mobile Proxy: Connect with 4G/5G carrier IPs. Visit ProxyTurk Mobile Proxy for details.
Method 6: Using a VPN
VPNs encrypt traffic through another server but have limitations: single IP, speed reduction, and detectable datacenter IPs. For proxy vs VPN comparison, read our article VPN vs Proxy: Which to Use?
Comparison of Methods
- Router restart: Free, easy but slow and uncontrollable.
- Manual IP change: Free but only changes local network IP.
- VPN: Location change but single IP and detection risk.
- Tor: Free and anonymous but very slow with high blocking risk.
- Proxy: Most flexible — multiple IPs, location selection, auto rotation, high speed.
Important Considerations
- DNS leaks: Even with a changed IP, DNS requests can reveal your real IP.
- WebRTC leaks: Browser WebRTC can expose your real IP. See our WebRTC and DNS Leak article.
- Consistency: Some platforms flag frequent IP changes. Use static proxy for account safety.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is changing your IP address legal?
Yes, changing your IP address is completely legal. Using proxies or VPNs poses no legal issues. However, using a changed IP for illegal activities is a crime.
Does the IP always change when I restart the router?
No. Even with dynamic IPs, the same IP may be reassigned if the DHCP lease hasn't expired. For guaranteed results, use a proxy.
What is the difference between proxy and VPN?
A proxy routes specific application traffic while a VPN encrypts all device traffic. Proxies are generally faster with multi-IP support for professional use.
How often should my IP change?
Depends on use case. For web scraping, every request is ideal. For social media, static IP is safer. ProxyTurk rotating proxies offer adjustable rotation intervals.
