Choosing the right proxy for your web scraping project directly determines your success rate. Start by analyzing the target site's protection level. For sites with simple protection (small blogs, static sites), datacenter proxy is sufficient — it's fast and economical. For sites using anti-bot solutions like Cloudflare, PerimeterX, or DataDome, prefer ISP proxy or residential proxy. For platforms with sophisticated protection like Amazon, Google, and Facebook, always use residential proxies. Rate limiting is the most fundamental strategy for preventing target sites from blocking you by controlling the number of requests per unit time. Fixed-interval requests are detected as robot behavior; instead, use random delays (jitter). For example, add 1-5 seconds of random delay between each request. Apply domain-based rate limiting: send at most 20-30 requests per minute to the same domain. When you receive errors (HTTP 429, 503), apply exponential backoff: wait 2 seconds for the first error, 4 seconds for the second, 8 seconds for the third. With adaptive rate limiting, you can dynamically adjust your request speed based on the target site's response time.

IP rotation along with rate limiting is the key to scraping success. The simplest strategy is using a different IP for each request — rotating proxy does this automatically. As a more sophisticated approach, you can use "weighted rotation": give weight to less-used IPs or those with higher success rates. First, use real browser User-Agents and select a different User-Agent for each session. Second, keep HTTP header ordering consistent with real browser behavior — the order of Accept, Accept-Language, Accept-Encoding matters. Third, use Puppeteer or Playwright for sites requiring JavaScript rendering and hide the navigator.webdriver flag. Fourth, add realistic delays between requests to avoid robot behavior patterns.
